Happy Birthday Aslan Khan!

This week in English class, there was discussion about how society can laugh men “out of vice and folly” or out of “virtue”. As I pondered to myself this duality of man, it occurred to me like Socrates that we must rethink our perceptions of what is virtuous and what is unjust.   Socrates was one of the last true great men. He was a social reject: dirty, ugly, non-religious, etc. — and despite all that he was still an incredibly popular figure. Socrates wasn’t just another Athenian philosopher who spoke and what was just or unjust, but instead spoke that men act according to their own momentarily flawed perceptions, which is where wrong-doing comes from. Socrates was so correct that his own people executed him. Thus goes the cycle of life.   What should you do if you get bullied? Step 1: Reconsider your own actions. Perhaps you were acting out of poor judgement. Take a break and sit down, relax, and reset your mind. Step 2: Consider whether your opponent is wrong. Your o...

Toys which resemble humans are not a symptom of autism

To be honest, I did not play with many toys which resembled humans when I was younger. Most of the toys that I liked were cute and fluffy stuffed animals or stuffed Pokemon, with bright colors and adorable cartoon faces that you could sleep with. Whether or not I internalized my own identity as a person due to these plushes I cannot be certain, however I am currently confident in my identity as a human. I had a few little girl dolls, but I found them harder to play with. Perhaps this was due to my childhood extreme social anxiety and fear of other people. I’m not sure in what way exactly little kids would play with, for example, a Barbie doll, but the way I played was through story telling. When I was younger, I was somehow able to remember word-for-word the scripts for musical theater plays (I wish I still had those memorizing skills now). Then I would assign an animal to each character and “reenact” the play for myself. Like any kid in the 2010’s, I was also obsessed with youTube — i...

Film is a lasting record that reveals the beliefs and occurrences of past society like a time-traveling mirror, allowing us to better understand our pasts and control our futures. As George Orwell wrote in "1984", “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." The portrayal of gender roles in past hit films shows what society viewed as acceptable and controversial. For example, the 1985 John Hughes film "The Breakfast Club" is highly renowned for addressing the divide between American high school cliques/social castes, including two women and three men. At first, all the characters appear to be satisfied with their given identities, yet it is quickly revealed that all is not as well as it seems. Misogynistic behavior can be seen all throughout the story where the rich girl is being harassed by the bad boy, who makes frequent intrusive comments about her virginity. The rich girl is embarrassed to answer his questions...
